Kickstart Motorcycle Training ( Bristol )

Legislation

The UK legislation that covers riding motorcycles can be complicated, the notes that follow should cover most of the points you need to know. If you are in an unusual situation or are not sure then please send us an e mail : pass@kickstart-mct.com or telephone 0800 0198919 and we will do our best to help.

At 16 years old or over you can ride a moped ( 50 cc or under, max speed 30 mph ), if you have a provisional licence and have taken a CBT. You will also need insurance, road tax, an MOT if needed, and L plates. You can go on and take a theory test and then the Driving Standards Agency test to gain a full moped licence.

At 17 years old or over you can ride a motorcycle up to 125 cc and limited to 14.6 BHP, if you have a provisional motorcycle licence and have taken a CBT. You will also need insurance, road tax, an MOT if needed, and L plates. You can go on and take a Theory test and then the Driving Standards Agency test to gain a restricted motorcycle licence. The restricted licence will enable you to ride any motorcycle provided it has less than 33 BHP, note this is purely a power restriction, it is possible to fit restrictor kits to more powerful motorcycles if you want. The restriction only applies for two years after which you can ride any motorcycle.

At 21 years old or over you are eligible for the Direct Access Scheme, this involves taking the Driving Standards Agency test on a motorcycle with more than 47 BHP. You can ONLY ride a motorcycle over 47 BHP if accompanied by a qualified instructor. If you need or want to ride without a qualified instructor on a provisional licence then all the restrictions at age 17 still apply. Once you have passed the Driving Standard Agency Test you can then ride any size motorcycle you wish.
