Training

Small Group CBT

Worried about training a big group ? We have set up some CBT courses with a maximum of 2 students on the training area which is big enough for 8. You will have the same instructor all day with plenty of time and room to learn how to ride.

What do I need to learn

The introduction of the Module One and Two tests has given us the opportunity to revise  our course layouts to make it clearer what you can expect to learn on our courses and give you a clearer idea of the standard needed to pass each test.

We have split the syllabus into four sections, each section will normally take a day to complete but we all learn at different rates so do not worry if a section takes longer to achieve, an extra days training can save you the cost of retaking tests and can work out cheaper in the long run.

Click on the links below to go to the relevant section to see the syllabus and standard of riding expected.

CBT Courses ( Compulsory Basic Training  )

The CBT is designed for riders with no previous experience and so covers all of the basics.

Intermediate Course

The Intermediate course will put in place all the basic skills needed to ride safely before progressing onto  a larger bike and/or  the Module 1 test

Level 1 Course ( Module 1 Test )

The Level 1 course will polish your control skills, cover everything you will need for the Module 1 Test and cover a large part of the road riding skills needed for the Module 2.

Level 2 Course ( Module 2 Test )

The Level 2 Course will polish up your road riding skills  giving you the confidence to pass the Module 2 test and more importantly deal with Bristol traffic.

Level 1 Course ( Mod One Test )

Level 1 Riders will hold a CBT certificate, be expected to have passed the Theory and Hazard Perception Test, and will be either already riding to Intermediate course requirements or have completed a Intermediate course satisfactorily

By the end of the course we would expect to see a good level of competence in all of the following topics, with perhaps occasional prompting and able to take and pass the Module One Test with confidence

Use of stands

Starting /stopping engines

Slow Control - slalom - figure eights - U turns - regular use in on road situations junctions - mini roundabouts etc.

Braking - a thorough understanding of the physics in involved when using brakes, always using brakes appropriately Able to stop from speed ( more than 30 MPH ) efficiently and with confidence

Able to Counter Steer

Gear changing and correct use of gears

Moving off and stopping - good control - sensible decision making about when and where, use of signals if needed Able to carry out hill starts confidently

Use of mirrors and use of Blind Spot checks as needed

Left and right turns good use of O S M P S L, always to a good standard of competence ( life savers in place with minimal prompting )

Roundabouts giving way as needed, good planning, good lane discipline, signals used as needed, blind spot checks carried out as needed

Positioning, an understanding of road positioning and speed to minimise exposure to hazards

General awareness of other road users

Bends, an understanding of the assessment of bends based on Visibility, Surface, Camber, Severity, and Obstructions

Following Distance, good use of 2 and 4 second gap, leaving clearance from stationary traffic

Able to use bus lanes without causing concern to other road users

Safe lane changing without causing concern to other roads users

Safe and competent overtaking when appropriate

Appropriate use of speed, generally able to maintain progress, comfortable at speeds up to 60 mph or so

A good knowledge of the Highway code

Able to take and pass the Module One Test with confidence

Level 2 Course ( Mod Two Test )

Level 2 Riders will hold a CBT certificate, will have passed the Theory and Hazard Perception and Module One Tests, and will be either already riding to Level 1 requirements or have completed a Level 1 course satisfactorily

By the end of the course we would expect to see a good level of competence in all of the following topics, with no more than occasional guidance and able to take and pass the Module Two Test with confidence

Safety and Maintenance Questions

Use of stands

Starting /stopping engines

Slow Control - slalom - figure eights - U turns - competent use in on road situations ie junctions - mini roundabouts and slow moving traffic and able to make tight slow speed manoeuvres

Braking - a thorough understanding of the physics involved when using brakes, always using brakes appropriately Able to stop from any normal road speed efficiently and with confidence

Counter Steering, used confidently, using the throttle to balance the bike through the turn

Gear changing and correct use of gears

Moving off and stopping - good control - sensible decision making about when and where, use of signals if needed Able to carry out hill starts confidently

Good use of mirrors and use of Blind Spot checks as needed

Left and right turns always to a good standard of competence using O S M P S L ( well judged life savers in place with no prompting )

Roundabouts giving way as needed, good planning on the approach to avoid unnecessary stops, good lane discipline, signals used as needed, blind spot checks carried out as needed, good use of speed to position the bike relative to other road users

Positioning, good use of road positioning and speed to minimise exposure to hazards

Good awareness of other road users, the ability to " fit in " with the flow of traffic, making good progress without causing concern to other road users

Bends, correct assessment of bends based on Visibility, Surface, Camber, Severity, and Obstructions

Following Distance, consistent use of 2 and 4 second gap, leaving clearance from stationary traffic

Able to use bus lanes with good forward planning and without causing concern to other road users

Safe lane changing without causing concern to other roads users

Safe and well planned overtaking when appropriate

Appropriate use of speed, generally able to maintain good progress, comfortable riding at the speed limit for the road when appropriate

A good knowledge of the Highway code

Able to take and pass the Module Two Test with confidence

Intermediate Course

Intermediate Riders will hold a CBT certificate, but are not expected at the start of the course to have more than limited experience or confidence

By the end of the course we would expect to see a basic level of competence and or understanding in all of the following topics on a 125 cc machine, before progressing to a Level 1 course on either a 125 cc or a 500 cc machine

Use of stands

Starting /stopping engines

Slow Control - slalom - figure eights - U turns - regular use of slow control in on road situations ie junctions - mini roundabouts

Braking - a good understanding of the physics in involved when using brakes, generally using brakes appropriately

Counter Steering basic understanding

Gear changing and correct use of gears

Moving off and stopping - control - sensible decision making about when and where

Mirrors basic use of mirrors and and knowledge of blind spots/distortion of distance

Left and right turns using O S M P S L, basically competent ( life savers generally in place )

Roundabouts giving way as needed, some planning, basic lane discipline, signals generally used as needed

Positioning aware of the use of positioning to avoid hazards

Awareness of other road users

Bends slowing down for bends,

Safe Lane Changing with some prompting

Following Distance, awareness of 2 and 4 second gap and leaving clearance from stationary traffic

Appropriate use of speed, generally able to maintain progress, comfortable at speeds up to 50 mph or so

A working knowledge of the Highway code

Some progress would have been made towards the Module One Test Riders to have a good understanding of what is involved during the test with riding skills good enough to carry out all of the exercises needed, but probably not to test standard

  • Training for the Module 1 Test Training for the the Module One test is not a problem, the test itself only involves  the ability to move the bike by hand and being able to use the stand, some slow speed exercises, the avoidance manoeuvre...
