Compulsory Basic Training

Need cheap transport ? happy to ride a 50 or 125 on L plates ? or want to gain experience on two wheels before taking the motorcycle test then you will need a Compulsory Basic Training course.

Training is the important bit, it is a fun day learning new skills !

The course starts off road, on a site approved by the Driving Standards Agency ( DSA ).

Very  briefly the syllabus covers Clothing, Motorcycle Controls, Maintenance, Starting, Stopping, Slow Control, Braking, Left and Right turns, and what to expect when Riding on the Road, followed by on road training.

The off road part of the courses normally takes 3 to 4 hours ( it may take longer if needed ).

The on road training lasts a minimum of 2 hours, but again may take longer. The on road part of the course covers all types of junctions, pedestrian crossings, different types of road and traffic situations, as well as U turns, emergency stops and hill starts.

At the end of the course you should feel comfortable riding out on the road, most people complete the CBT in one day but it may take longer, we all have our own skills and abilities.

Once up to the required standard you will be issued with a CBT certificate, the certificate is valid for two years, if you are 16 you can ride a machine up to 50 cc, if you are 17 or over you can ride up to a 125 cc, you will need to keep the L plates on, you are not allowed to carry pillion passengers or use motorways.

If you are wondering what the required standard is the answer is simple, would we be happy to let you ride home on your own and still have a clear conscience, if so you get a CBT certificate. If further training is required a charge will be made.

You can renew the CBT before  two the years are up if you have not passed your test by then.

Please note, most people will complete the CBT in a day, but not everyone will have reached the required standard after a day and further training may be needed.

You can take a CBT at either of our centres, Keynsham or Clevedon.
